Health Humanities, Minor

The Health Humanities minor is an interdisciplinary program that explores health and disease through historical, social, cultural, and political perspectives. This minor is particularly valuable for students pursuing careers in healthcare, public health, or related fields.
To declare this minor, students contact a History undergraduate advisor to schedule an advising session.

Learning Outcomes


Upon completing the Health Humanities minor, students will be able to:

• Identify diverse global examples of disease experience and treatment
• Describe how healthcare, health, and disease reflect historical, social, and cultural contexts
• Apply humanities methodologies to analyze health and healthcare information
• Demonstrate skills in perspective-taking, qualitative description, and communication

Admission Requirement*


Complete one of the following General Education Foundation courses (FGC) with a grade of C or better (C- does not qualify):

*A History undergraduate advisor may waive the admission requirement for transfer and other students who have an approved substitute course.

Program Requirements


Total Credits: 15 credits of approved upper-division courses
Course Distribution: Must include one History course plus courses from at least two other subject areas (a minimum of three different fields)
UH Mānoa credits: At least 6 credits must be completed at UH Mānoa
Grade Requirement: All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better (C- does not qualify)
Substitutions: One upper-division course not on the approved list may be substituted with History undergraduate advisor approval.
For approved courses with prerequisites, students without prerequisites can register with consent of the instructor. Students should contact instructors directly and request registration overrides.
