The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s School Counseling program provides graduate-level training designed to prepare students for a career as a professional school counselor. This is a 48-credit program leading to a Master of Education (MEd) in Counseling.
The program emphasizes a holistic approach to school counseling, focusing on the academic, career, and social-emotional development of students. Through coursework, supervised field experiences, and a culminating project, students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to become effective, ethical, and culturally responsive school counselors.

Admission Requirements
In addition to the application form required by Graduate Division, prospective students must submit: - Personal Statement: A well-written personal statement is required as part of the application. This statement should detail the applicant’s interest in school counseling, describe any relevant experiences, and outline their professional goals in the field.
- Letters of Recommendation: Three professional letters of recommendation are required. These should be from individuals who can speak to the applicant’s academic abilities, professional potential, and personal qualities relevant to success in school counseling.
- Curriculum Vitae or Resume Applicants must submit a current resume or curriculum vitae that highlights their educational background, work experience, and any relevant volunteer or extracurricular activities.
- Transcript(s) of all prior undergraduate and graduate course work to Graduate Division.
- For non-native speakers of English, a minimum TOEFL score of 600/100 or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (overall band test results) unless waived in accordance with Graduate Division guidelines.
Field Experience Courses and Seminar
Completion of Plan A (6 additional credits) or Plan B
If candidates are completing their Plan A or B requirement and are not enrolled in other courses, they must be enrolled in at least one credit of EDEP 699 - Directed Reading and/or Research . |
