The Academic Program
UH Mānoa Nursing offers a continuum of academic programs with a rich nursing curriculum enhanced by innovative, technological resources such as the UH Translational Health Science Simulation Center and web-based distance learning. Highly qualified and clinically competent faculty, valuable clinical practicums, endeavors in research and scholarship, and internship and interprofessional education opportunities are an integral part of the UH Mānoa Nursing program experience.
UH Mānoa Nursing offers multiple pathways and degrees to further one’s career goals, whether you are entering the program directly from high school or as a consortium college student, choosing a second career in nursing, or advancing your nursing career with a graduate degree.
The bachelor of science in nursing degree prepares beginning-level generalist professional nurses to deliver care to individuals in a variety of health-care settings, meet the state requirements for eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN), and obtain a sound foundation for graduate study in nursing. The UH Mānoa Nursing bachelor’s curriculum meets the requirements of the Hawaiʻi Board of Nursing to obtain a Hawaiʻi RN license.
The Graduate Entry Program in Nursing (GEPN) provides an opportunity for students with a non-nursing baccalaureate degree to pursue a career as an advanced practice nurse or nurse leader by completing a graduate degree in nursing.
The master of science (MS), nursing major degree program prepares the student in advanced population health, and nursing education & leadership.
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed as a professional (practice) doctorate integrating evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and systems leadership to prepare experts in specialized advanced nursing practice.
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing is designed to prepare visionary scholars capable of conducting research and generating new knowledge to improve the health of culturally diverse populations, especially in Hawai’i and the Pacific Basin regions and countries.

Essential Functions for Nursing
The School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene (SONDH) is committed to training competent, caring nurses through high quality undergraduate and graduate education. Upholding the highest standards of nursing ethics, we recognize our responsibility to society and our students by ensuring patient safety, promoting equitable healthcare, and fostering an environment of integrity, respect, and professional accountability. To fulfill this ethical obligation, the Department of Nursing (DON) has established essential function criteria that support patient safety and well-being while supporting student success.
In accordance with University of Hawaiʻi policies and federal and state statutes, rules, and regulations, reasonable accommodations will be made to facilitate the progress of the otherwise qualified candidate. Such accommodations will be made, provided they do not fundamentally alter the nature of the program, significantly lower or substantially modify academic standards, or adversely affect the rights of other students.
Special Requirements
Nursing students are expected to participate in clinical and field work experiences at various community agencies and at times that may vary from regular academic schedules. Therefore, students are responsible for arranging their own time and transportation to accommodate these irregular schedules.
Students with prerequisite course deficiencies may not register for or attend clinical courses. Additionally, students must meet all requirements set forth by the clinical agencies. Those students with course deficiencies are not permitted to attend clinical courses.
Students are required to meet the technology requirements of the program. Each nursing student must have a laptop with internet capabilities. For PC laptop specifications, please refer to the UH ITS computer recommendations.

It is the responsibility of the student to satisfactorily complete affiliated clinical facility background checks and drug testing requirements in accordance with procedures and timelines as prescribed by the affiliated agency. Students must adhere to all additional on-boarding requirements of the agency.
If a student does not meet the requirements established by the affiliated clinical agency, the university is not responsible for providing an alternative clinical site or clinical experience. Graduate nursing courses are offered in online, face-to-face, and hybrid (blended) formats. Programs may be part-time or full-time, depending on the pathway.
Degrees
The entry routes provide a seamless, accelerated approach to a graduate nursing degree for:
- Master of Science: prepares the nurse for advanced roles in population health and nursing education & leadership
- Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): prepares the nurse for specialized advanced nursing practice and organizational leadership
- PhD in Nursing: prepares the nurse for a career in research
Graduate Entry Program in Nursing (GEPN)
The Graduate Entry Program in Nursing provides an opportunity for students with a non-nursing baccalaureate degree to pursue a career as an advanced practice nurse or nurse leader by completing a graduate degree in nursing. It is designed for adult learners who have not attended an RN educational program; who have a baccalaureate degree or higher in a field other than nursing; who are leadership bound and seeking a career in advanced nursing; and who will seamlessly transition into the masterʻs or DNP program.
GEPN is a pre-entry specialty pathway for students who have a non-nursing baccalaureate degree to complete a graduate Nursing degree in one of four (4) specialty tracks. It IS NOT an accelerated bachelor’s degree offering program.
The program consists of an intensive pre-licensure curriculum delivered across three continuous semesters. Emphasis is placed on health promotion and disease prevention as well as the care of the acutely ill person.
A substantial amount of the curriculum are clinical practicums in community and hospital/health care settings where students are actively engaged in nursing care under the supervision of faculty. Threaded throughout the curriculum are research, patient safety, community nursing health, and culture as well as the various contexts (i.e., historical & social) of nursing, nursing roles, and the core values of the profession.
The first year of GEPN is the Pre-Licensure year because the student has not yet earned an RN license. This is a one year, full-time (3 semesters), pre-entry specialty pathway program.
Upon completing the Pre-Licensure Year, students become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN national licensing exam. Beginning the second year, students are expected to transition directly into their graduate specialty track and enroll in nursing courses for their advanced degree. Students must pass the NCLEX-RN exam and earn the RN license by the end of the 1st semester in their graduate degree program. A degree is awarded at the completion of the Master of Science or Doctor of Nursing Practice program.
