General Information
Participants in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program-recipients of the National NROTC scholarship and College Programmers-are pursuing a commission in the Navy or Marine Corps following their graduation and completion of all NROTC commissioning requirements.
The Academic Program
The Academic Program offers a total of eight 3 credit courses for NROTC students to complete over the course of 4 years. Required NROTC courses vary slightly between students that select the Navy vs. Marine Corps option.
Course offerings include:
- Drill and Leadership Lab (All 4 years)
- Introduction to Naval Science (Freshman)
- Seapower & Maritime Affairs (Freshman)
- Leadership & Management (Sophomore)
- Navigation (Sophomore)
- Naval Engineering (Junior)
- Weapons (Junior)
- Naval Operations and Seamanship (Senior)
- Leadership & Ethics (Senior)
- Evolution of Warfare (Marine Option Students)
- Maneuver Warfare (Marine Option Students)
A critical element to the professional development of all NROTC midshipmen is drill and leadership lab, and physical fitness training. This is where student participants will be challenged to embrace core Naval values; develop their own leadership voices; examine and appreciate organization history, present and future challenges; and learn to work with others both as leaders and followers to promote qualities such as honor, courage, and commitment.
Scholarships
Recipients of the national 4-year NROTC scholarship will have all tuition, fees, and books covered. NROTC scholarship recipients also receive a monthly stipend that increases from year to year based on academic year group ($300-500/month). College programmers (currently enrolled UH Mānoa students successfully screened and selected to participate in the NROTC program in a nonscholarship status) can compete for 3- and 2-year scholarships. College Program Navy students not selected for the 2-year scholarship, can earn advanced standing status which entitles the student to the following benefits:
- $350/month stipend in junior year
- $400/month in senior year
- Uniforms
- New Student Indoctrination; 1 summer cruise
