Distribution, diversity, and roles of microorganisms in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. Importance of bacteria in pesticide degradation, bioremediation of oil spills, sewage treatment, biocontrol, food fermentation.

Prerequisites: BIOL 171 and CHEM 272 , or consent.
